8 Months of Bushwick is Beautiful ~ LET'S CELEBRATE!

Heading up to Montreal today for Mutek festival and to catch Ghetto Pony live. Expect some video highlights very soon. In the meantime let's celebrate June 1st as being the 9th month of existence of BIB.

Bushwick and Blow: A Match Made in Heaven?

Behind door # 2 we have BLOW. The band kids.

The Blow - Poor Aim: Love Songs

From Dusted Magazine:

"Normally a comparison between the latest teen pop sensation and a DIY diva like The Blow would be utter nonsense. A gap wider than the distance between Olympia and L.A. lies between not only the style of music involved, but also the artists respective approaches, aesthetics and audiences. Therefore, it is more than curious when a songstress tries to assert herself on the other side of the divide, and this mostly occurs in one direction, from the mainstream to the indie. That is, it is common for the Avrils to decry the Britneys, flaunting songwriting or producing credit to get away from the stereotype of corporate canned talent. Rarely does it cross the other way without the kids crying sell out. However, on Khaela Maricichs latest EP as The Blow, Poor Aim: Love Songs, she teams up with Jona Bechtolt to shoot at a much larger audience. Or at least at an audience willing to smile ironically and dance their hearts away. "

Sigur Ros' Opening Band

As we have been looking through our live tapes we undiscovered this gem. This band tours with Sigur Ros' as the backing band, and also opened for them on their last winter tour through North America. The video below was recorded live @ Joe's Pub in Febuary. Amina played with Without Gravity for "an evening of Icelandic Music".
It doesn't hurt that one of girls in Amina looks a lot like Mary Timony. Beautiful music made by beautiful people, we have no complaints.

Amina (Iceland)

Amina bio:

"We are 4 friends who met while studying at the Reykjavik College of Music in the 1990s. Since then, we have been playing all sorts of music with all sorts of people together. In the spring 2004 we started cooking our own music, and in December that year we released our EP AnimaminA. "

Meet the Infidels

Infidels Live @ Asterisk

Another band we are very impressed with from Saturday's show in Bushwick. The band has vocals coming from everyone, and a lot of energy. Watching this video in the comfort of your own home puts a whole new light on them. We look forward to seeing these guys again very soon.
Check out this MP3 from the band.

Bushwick is Beautiful: The Video

Today was a warm beautiful sunny day in Bushwick. I made this little video that wraps it up quite nicely. Last night's great show @ Asterisk lead to the usual Sunday afternoon Life Cafe tradition. It's really the place where we recover.

Show Tonight In Bushwick

Saturday May 27th

HUGE party at Asterisk as a fundraiser for local project Trees Not Trash with 6 bands and the best damn dance party in town with Nublu's Justin Carter.

The Line-up: (Click on the Band for Mp3)

9 - Plastic East - Bushwick trio playing classic Rock'n'Roll, back at Asterisk after playing the Deli Magazine's show back in January

10 - Infidels - Brooklyn 4-piece, playing indie-pop unlike most other indie bands. Gorgeous vocals over fast, catchy songs. Debut EP is just out and available to you all for free tonight. Special, for you, special.

11 - Bravo Silva - Amazing. No bullshit, they're really, really great. Again there's loads of press to read, here and here, but these guys are so good and will be so big that you will never see them again in real life. You might think you did and tell your friends you did, but you didn't.
Highly Recommended!

12 - Other Passengers - Fantastic local band who we've finally managed to get back at Asterisk. They've got a ton of great press to back us up here. Indie rock at it's finest.

1 - Project Jenny, Project Jan - A prefect band for getting the dancing started. Billboard credits them with developing their own style of "electro-karaoke. The result is a shockingly dynamic, danceable and often hilarious affair". Damn right.

Plus - special guest Jimes will be doing his thing in the back room. Coming all the way from Baltimore to help the trees and stuff but mainly for a re-match with our dog Sallly, who kicked his ass last time he played.

AND, all this is followed by Nublu's main man Justin Carter with his ass-shaking, move busting dance party that keeps going till you pass out. This guy has done plenty of parties at Asterisk before and every single one, without exception, has been fantastic. You will dance your face off and welcome in the summer.

Doors at 8pm - $8 / $5 after 1am

Directions:
From Manhattan, make your way to the L-Train to Brooklyn. Exit the subway at Montrose Avenue and walk South (slightly downhill) on Bushwick 1 block until you hit Johnson Avenue. Turn left onto Johnson and walk one block to 258. Look for the illuminated asterisk.

8mm - New Trip Hop To Feast On

8mm: Husband/Wife Duo
Juliette Beavan
Sean Beavan

This Los Angeles Band comes out of the ashes of NiN, as Sean was Trent Reznor's engineer/producer. The "band" does feel a bit produced and safe, but it's worth checking out. All of the songs we have heard have shown some promise. It will be interesting to see if they can step it up a little during a live performance.

Brooklyn Lager = D-

Brooklyn Lager: Brewed in the Street?

Every time we are at the Deli to buy some beer, we encounter the same problem. We check out the choices and come to Brooklyn Lager. There is a sense of pride or hometown love the word Brooklyn on anything represents. The problem is that the Beer is horrible from beginning, middle, to the horrible end (after taste). It tastes like it was brewed on the streets of Brooklyn, seriously this stuff is that bad. Every thing we choose to buy the Brooklyn beer we end up being very disappointed. Our Grade: D-

Ghetto Pony - Montreal's Newest Sensation

artwork: Cia
Ghetto Pony = PONIES GONE WILD!

In an attempt to form a rock group without heavy guitars and standard drums, Ghetto Pony has given birth to a modern sonic gulag of crissed-crossed genres. Originating out of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, the three-piece group has since galloped over to it's present residence of Montreal, Quebec. By fusing laptop performance with a live band, Ghetto Pony delivers a manufactured chaos of heavy artillery masked in bouquets of roses.

There is a lot of Fear and Hatred for Bushwick

We have seen a lot of anti-Bushwick postings of late. Here are a few that stood out to us.

Bushwick, as it is, is a dump. No amount of real estate articles trying to sell the neighborhood can convince me otherwise. I was betweeen apartments several years ago and stayed temporarily with a friend in Bushwick. During the 2 months that I was there, I saw two shootings, ambulances with blood soaked bodies and the whole shebang. The parking lot I walked across to get to the horrible J/Z line was strewn with needles and empty crack packets. I would not give you $2 to live in that bombed out warzone. Whoever moves there, at least for some time to come, is basically playing the lottery with their personal safety. You want to buy something from the store at night? good luck. You will stand OUTSIDE of a store, put your money through a plexi-glass box, and wait in line with the project thugs until the proprieter brings what you wanted. One of the articles mentioned being 10 minutes from Manhattan. I just love those optimistic estimates which don't take into account that you will wait forever in an unsafe area until a train finally arrives, dirty and full of characters. You will see giant cockroaches running from one apartment building to another.

I feel fine in the South Bronx, but Bushwick scares me.

Bushwick=Iraq is very similar to the Brooklyn=Iraq line I get from out of towners. Or all the posters asking if it's safe to use the subway after dark.

Funny thing is, the trouble for me started when I got off the subway in Bushwick. Three guys were walking ahead of me and my friend, and they kept looking over their shoulders at us, as if plotting their next move to coincide with ours. It was obvious enough to my friend, who is from Washington Heights, that they were plotting whether to mug us, and even naïve little old me could tell something was off, too.On our way back to the subway, a gaggle of hipsters — there must have been 30 of them; why do they always travel in packs? — swarmed out of the darkness — there are practically no streetlights there — just as we reached the station. It was surreal. In most parts, Bushwick needs a lot of work. There's very little active streetlife like in the Village or even in Willimsburgh; truly residential areas aside, the dense concentration of warehouses create blank walls at ground level with little opportunity for retail without serious renovations: housing projects for hipsters. By comparison, I felt safer in Bed-Stuy because the area I went to was mostly rowhouses with front stoops, with a main commercial strip just a few blocks away.In any case, I don't judge Brooklyn by what happens in Bushwick, and no one with any sense would do that either. It's like judging Boston by what happens in Dorchester.

Mar 3, 2006 7:50 pm US/EasternNo Suspects In Brooklyn Robbery2 Men ShotHazel SanchezReporting(CBS) BROOKLYN Just after 11 o'clock Friday morning, employees from a Bushwick jewelry store were stunned and traumatized when police say four masked gunmen entered their shop at Eight Graham St. and shot the store owner and another worker.Investigators say the robbers took a hammer and smashed the glass casing filled with high-end jewelry. Police say the men grabbed some goods and took off.Juan Rodriguez works at a leather goods store nearby. He rushed into the jewelry store to help."I saw a man down on the ground and he had been shot," Rodriguez said. "Then I saw two bullets on the shelf."Investigators believe the four suspects had cased the jewelry store before their heist today. Police say one man came into the store with a shot gun and the other three were armed with handguns. Police also say the owner went after the suspects with a bat and the gunmen started shooting. The 60- year-old owner was shot in the stomach. The 27-year-old employee was shot in the buttocks. Both were rushed to Bellvue hospital where they were last listed in serious condition. The robbers took off in a dark colored SUV and police say it may be a Ford Explorer with Maryland plates.

Ha! that's an understatement. Boys (if you don't look like you "belong") better watch their backs too.Up and Coming! It has a Looooong way to go! Holy Jesus! If you don't mind being a locked-in "pioneer" for the next 5 years go ahead. Some things matter more to me than dollars per sq. ft.- like actually feeling comfortable when I walk home at night. Oh- and you can be sure the attitude of locals as they see Whitey moving in on their neighborhood will often be less than welcoming. I don't picture all those project boys bringing cake on a welcome wagon, especially as they see their neighbors being pushed out.

We Get Our Share Of Hate Mail

We've loved the great emails and posts from people this year. Lets face it though, it's not always positive. We can take the good with the bad people. We have thick skin, that's why we live where we do.

So, onto the hate.

In the Mood for Hating: A Field Guide to Blogosphere Hype

Hey, are you totally fucking sick of hearing about Gnarls Barkley yet? I sure am.

If you read music blogs at all, you know it's been impossible to avoid hearing about this band (or 'band'), weeks and months before any actual record of theirs came out. Most of the initial hype centered around DJ Dangermouse doing a 'soul' record, which made me think, okay, hype aside that might be all right. His "Gray Album" was good, and "Dangerdoom" was okay. I never really had an opinion on Cee-lo, the singer, other than to think that his old band, Goodie Mob, always kinda blew--but I realize I'm prejudiced because I think that all rap from the South inherently sucks grits.

Then their big single, "Crazy", got major press in the UK for going #1 just on internet downloads, and apparently now there's some peculiarly English mass-hysteria for this band? (An alternate title for this post was: The UK Has Gone Fucking Insane.)

Unfortunately, now that I've actually heard the record, I can safely say it's as soulful as a ziplock baggie full of dog farts. Really the most startling thing about it is that it's so hideously bland, so preternaturally underwhelming. It's not even like I hate this record. How can you? There's nothing there to hate. But that doesn't stop eight million bloggers from posting about it like it's the second coming.

CubikMusik and Clever Titles Are So Last Summer are just two of the unnumbered legions of blogs (just this week alone!) who posted GB's Top-of-the-Pops smash "Crazy" (or here). CubikMusik describes this slab of punishing mediocrity as a "classic". CTASLS calls it the "craziest psychadelic soul jam that Prince couldn't even come up with". Both are smoking crack rock.

The Laws Have Changed posted GB's cover of that Violent Femmes song, "Gone Daddy Gone". And even if not too many other blogs have posted it, they all seem to agree it's doubleplus awesome that GB picked that song. Hello! It's a boring cover of a song that really isn't any good in the first place!

Silence is a Rhythm Too posted this track, "The Last Time", and at least admits that the hype on this group is totally absurd. In case you're wondering, this song blows too.

Bushwick is Beautiful (which has an interesting title, but that's about it) calls Gnarls Barkley "the Outkast of 2006", which pretty much sums up why I was sick of them before I ever heard a single song. He does, to be fair, post "Smiley Faces", the sole song on the album that is even remotely catchy.

What is up with the Hipsters! ?

We applaud "t -bird" for his video about "hipsters" in Brooklyn. He also reminds us of why some have moved out of Williamsburg to Bushwick.

My Dad Vs. Yours

My Dad Vs. Yours

With their first full length, My Dad vs Yours force down post-rock barricades to a state where pop melodies take precedence over orchestral crescendos; where electronic beats, slide guitar and shoegaze co-exist in vibrant harmony; where instrumentals can incite sing-alongs. Recorded over the marrow-chilling months of 2005-06, After Winter Must Come Spring is tulips pushing through a late thaw. It is the sound of intense expectation that focuses not on escape but upon communal re-alignment. Though not a movement, it draws upon the social energies behind one: sometimes sullen, often celebratory, always self-aware and questioning boundaries.

Tapes n' Tapes - The Loon

Why did it take us so long to jump on the Tapes n' Tapes bandwagon? So much new music is constantly flowing through our hands here. Sometimes it just takes spending a little more time with the music. Tapes n' Tapes went for quite a long time before being signed. The Band have recently signed to XL records. So many labels dropped the ball on not signing these guys quickly. One has to wonder if the same fate will happen to another favorite of ours the the swimmers? Now how long will it take for this band to blow up? The songs on The Loon suggest the wait will be short. If you are on the few people left to have not heard the band, download these tracks then buy the album. It's good from start to finish.

Get Ready For the Wave of Radiohead

Get ready For the wave of Radiohead. With the new album and tour on the way, prepare yourself for daily new posts of Radiohead MP3's all over the internet. We've heard 4 new songs live to date, "Bodysnatchers" "Arpeggi", Bangers n' Mash", and "Cymbal Rush". You can check Hype Machine for daily new MP3's updates. These MP3's were recorded live on May 1st 2006.

Radiohead singer Thom Yorke and bandmate Jonny Greenwood have played new songs at a special one-off show in London. the pair took a rare trip out of their Oxford studio, where they're working on the follow-up to 'Hail To The Thief' to play the KOKO club in aid of Friends Of The Earth. the band played semi-acoustic versions of some of their biggest hits and three new songs.

the tracks 'Arpeggi', 'Bodysnatchers' and 'Cymbal Rush', were mixed in with songs such as 'Karma Police', 'No Surprises' and closer 'Paranoid Android'. 'Arpeggi', a ballad, was played by Yorke on finger-picked acoustic and Greenwood on softly distorted electric guitar. it featured the lyrics "Why should I stay here... I'd be crazy not to follow." Towards the end of the song, Greenwood swapped his guitar and started playing organ. 'Bodysnatchers' was far more uptempo and featured the lyric "I'm trapped in this body... can't get out," while the third new song was the best of the bunch. at the beginning, Yorke sampled and looped his own voice to create a drum beat before playing a piano over the top. the song featured the line "You should have took me out when you had a chance." Two other members of Radiohead, bassist Colin Greenwood and guitarist Ed O'Brien, watched the show from the balcony.

the setlist included:

'Karma Police'
Radiohead - "There There" Live MP3

'Pyramid Song'
'How To Disappear Completely'
