Still Recovering from the Syrup Room Show Last Night

Davendra Banhart = Cure for Hangover

Still recovering from last night's show at the Syrup Room. Every band was enjoyable, but this hangover is not. The only thought that doesn't make my brain hurt is listening to this song on that beach. As for the track, Devendra and Reggae jams, seems to makes sense somehow.

Pattern Is Movement

Pattern is Movement

Glad we came out a little early to the Knitting Factory last week. We got to catch a set from Philly's Pattern in Movement. They won over the crowd, including this Bushwick crew, by the end of their set. They say they sound like Blonde Redhead, June of 44, and Aloha. We would agree with those influences. The band has a lot of dramatic shifts in tempo and style, which is what really got us into the set. They also have one hell of a drummer who will blow your eardrums off if you aren't careful. These guys impressed the hell out of us, and we look forward to having them come play Bushwick before the year is out.

Radiohead - Bonnaroo MP3

Radiohead - House of Cards (Bonnaroo)

This is definitely our favorite new Radiohead song from their recent tour. This MP3 is from Bonnaroo, and is the best version we have heard. "House of Cards" almost has a Caribbean island vacation feel to it. This is the most seductive Thom has ever sounded.

"I don't wanna be your friend
I just wanna be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts"

Cobra Verde - Covers

Cobra Verde - Copycat Killers

Copycat Killers is a collection of covers Cobra Verde claim to have learned in order to experiment in the studio. It runs the gamut of influences, from several you might expect (Easter Monkeys, the Troggs, Undertones) to a few that will make you cock your head in wonder (Donna Summer, Pink). The obvious covers are aflame with Verdes trademark swagger, but its the psychedelic twist on Summers I Feel Love and the swinging epic of Leonard Cohens So Long, Marianne that show the band pushing toward newer, exciting directions. All experiments aside, Cobra Verde make rock n roll to spill your drink to, and Copycat Killers is more proof that they could make the whole country shake its ass, if only they were willing to move away from Cleveland.

How much "love" is happening right now in bushwick? I'm on my roof looking around my bushwick world, and wondering what is going on in these apartments around me. It's probably better to not know, so I'll leave you with some funk from Nicolay and Mr. Scruff. Please turn up the music when you engage in love making. These songs will do just fine.

Video Blogging: The Next Generation

So what's next for Video Blogging?

Video blogging has become and increasing popular way for someone to express themselves online. This new fad is rising in popularity for use in sites like Google Video, Myspace, and You Tube. We wondered what types of new profiles people could have. In the default picture space in myspace imagine this video clip above there instead. Oh yes and while you are at it Daniel, we want space stations, talking cars, and 3-D worlds. You know, all the stuff that was promised to us growing up. Get on it!

Portishead's New Album...

Amazing video from Portishead's '97-'98 tour. This is why we want them back.

Portishead's New Album...
Portishead's next record is coming out sometime between now and when we die....maybe.
We do know that this band is in the studio and has assembled a full albums worth of demo's. From the band's myspace blog, Geoff has been updating with well "updates", or ramblings. Anyways, something is better than nothing I suppose. He says "the tracks are in a right mess but sounding like a album for the first time in years, their fukin a bit weird though.........". He also goes on to knock bands that the press has label portishead-ish, "coffee table zero 7 - moby - chill out shit!!". Interesting stuff indeed. You can follow along the Portishead drunken update fun here. Thank you for keeping us up to date Geoff. The newest track we have is "Requiem For Anna" which was released on a soundtrack earlier this year. Sounds a bit like OK Computer Radiohead to me, with the guitars and all.

Free polls from Pollhost.com

We have a new poll up, so please take the time to vote for your favorite music blog. Where do you go to get your favorite music? Who has made you buy the most music from MP3's that they've posted? Who has turned you on to the most new bands? Simply, Which blog posts the best music? Our last poll asks which band's new record are you most excited for. Radiohead beat out Tool by 10 votes. Go to Music is Art and check out Radiohead's entire concert from last week in Boston. They give you recommend tracks and offer some sort of cosulation for those that did not get tickets for this tour.

There are so many great music blogs out there it's hard to know where to start. Personally, we used to only visit Fluxblog, since then so many new sites have popped up. Lately we've been going everyday to Music is Art and Motel de Moka, because they post so much good music. All of these blogs on our poll are obviously fans of music, and offer a less annoying place than Pitchfork or Rolling Stone to find out about new music. Palms out Sounds are another favorite, and really hasn't posted anything poor it's it's young existence. Gorilla Vs. Bear is a well rounded music site with special props for being the first blog to post Bosque Brown. For that we will always love them. Hard to pick just 10 blogs to vote on because there are really quite a few good ones. Some places to wade through the MP3 madness are Elbows and Hype Machine. They are blog aggregators which collect thousands of MP3s and give you easy access to listen to lots of music fast. The music industry has been slow to understand how to handle all this posting of free music online. Some understand the true promotional utility that they blogs posses. These blogs are usually hyping up their bands and doing the free work for the music labels. Bands like Arctic Monkeys, Gnarls Barkley, and Sufjan Stevens owe some of their success to the blogging world. Most blogs will post a link to buy the album, but better yet are really talking up the album which most labels usually have to pay for. All Bloggers need to practice appropriate blogging ethics. If you are going to host music, do it with the artist and label in mind. We can't really expect some of these old farts to get it, but we can lead the way by showing them why we are actually helping. Keep posting great music that is our life soundtrack, thank you for your efforts and passion. - Bushwick is Beautiful

The In-Kraut: Hip Shaking German Grooves 1966-1974

The In-Kraut: Hip Shaking German Grooves 1966-1974
20 Mindblowing Beat, Sound, Soul & Soundtrack Nuggets

Collecting 20 of Germany's hippest songs from 1966-74, the mixture of swing, psych and beat is surely entertaining one way or the other, but the quality varies drastically.
Guenter Noris' "Gemini," for example, is pretty enjoyable even though it reeks of its era with a piano-driven, synth-drenched feel, while "Marihuana Mantra" from Kuno & The Marihuana Brass perhaps speaks for itself. On the other hand, a bass groove and funky keys like those offered by "Why Don't You Play The Organ" (Memphis Black) never lose their appeal.
Many of these songs can't help but cause flashbacks to cheesy, hippified scenes from early-'70s movies, with young folks dancing beneath light shows to show that the movie's down with youth culture. Others, though, such as "Wie A Glockn" by Marianne Mendt, are resolutely based in unapologetic pop.
Perhaps the best songs here are the instrumental jams like "Moving Out" (Orchester Helmuth Brandenburg), "Beat It" (Freddy Brock), and the closing "Undergroovin'" by Eugen Thomass. The funk and soul-inspired bass lines, riffing guitars and terrific horns are still fresh today.
But then there's the Peter Thomas Soul Orchestra's version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash," which is nothing but pure kitsch. Amusing, but even from the vantage point of decades hence, that's about all one can say about it. Likewise, "Bodybuilding" by Orchester Werner Muller is just plain silly, and Bill Lawrence's "Pussy Baby" is worth a chuckle but its wimpy wah guitar does nothing to lift it above joke status.
The cynic in me says that this collection is basking in the largesse of today's irony-laden environment, but it's true enough that a good half of the songs here are pretty legitimately cool. The other half are vaguely enjoyable, but some are, in truth, only good for a laugh.
On the upside, the CD's booklet has excellent liner notes with pictures and details about every artist and track. Compilers Stefan Kassel and Frank Jastfelder did a very good job pulling it all together, despite any misgivings I may have about some of the inclusions.

MONO / PELICAN SPLIT LP

MONO / PELICAN SPLIT LP

The inaugural release in an on-going series of Hydra Head Industries/Temporary Residence Ltd. split LPs is a monumental masterpiece of relentless beauty and depth. Pelican start things off on a light note with the warm, acoustic "Ran Amber," followed by a James Plotkin remix of "Angel Tears." The b-side offers the most cathartic 15 minutes of music that Mono has ever committed to tape. Gliding in three epic movements like a heavy metal orchestra, this is as vivid an image of the edge of the world as you'll ever get through music. Strictly limited to 4,000 copies (most of which will be sold on the bands' tours), with a small amount of colored vinyl available while supplies last (which will be about a week, if we're lucky). These songs are NOT available elsewhere, and are NOT available on CD, so don't even ask!

Bushwick: Williamsburg's Bastard Stepchild

Let the Bushwick hype begin, or really just continue to increase. So far we've read the New York Times articles hyping Bushwick as the next "hot spot" in Brooklyn, as well as others. Came across the well put together article from Papermag:

"Wait, wait, wait!" I clutch my companion's arm, and we halt in the middle of an empty, silent block in northwestern Bushwick. A plastic, non-Whole Foods grocery bag tumbles by on a breeze. We are not strangers to lowly neighborhoods, nor do we doubt our ability to traverse them safely -- that nerdy guy from MTV probably lives somewhere around here… but something is a little off right now. "What is that smell?"

"I think," she said, "I think that is the smell of industry."

Mmmm, Bushwick. If it is not the reek of Boars Head or the fumes of a chop shop offending your adventurous little nose, it's only because a banshee 18-wheeler just breezed by. Or pretty frequently, you just smell pot wafting from what looks like an empty warehouse. Right now, the burg-ward side of Bushwick is somewhat lively. If you read the New York Times Real Estate section, you may have been led to believe that the hood is "hot" or even "really super hot," but in truth, it's just full of dirty kids with a penchant for cute vegan food, whiskey bars with iPod DJs and hastily but lovingly produced rock shows in little shit-hole venues.

"Is that the spot? Where that noise is coming from?"

"No. No, that's a... a shirt-making factory."

The question is, can we find any of it? Bushwick, Brooklyn is evolving. And as is the case with evolution, sometimes you end up with some curious species. Horses once had toes, the Bowery will soon be all luxury condos, and, currently, the Bushwick landscape appears to be mated from Mad Max and Kids Incorporated. Everything here, including the L train that services it, is in the pre-stardom phase of its career. Allow PAPERMAG to show you around the promise and the pee-yoo.

THE SYRUP ROOM, 100 Ingraham St., (917) 608-2467.

We found the spot, finally. They have a green light bulb -- a single, green light bulb. The Syrup Room, a rock club, would seem a bit loath to project a "Come One, Come All" attitude. Inside was nice, though. At this point in its life, it is a little "thrown together." Naked incandescent bulbs lit the stage in front of a sheet draped on a wire, making anyone performing look like a shadow puppet act, and between the cinder block walls, the pile of coats on a sidelined electric organ, and a stray music stand, this could have been anyones parents' basement. But it felt like the crowd was excited to be there, and that's what makes us call back for a second date.

Proton Proton headlined that night, but the Syrup Room plays host to better known acts too (Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance, Bravo Silva, all just recently), and as it scrimps and saves, the whole outfit should one day be able to redecorate, or move into a more conventional location, as did we, after we finished our frosty cans of PBR ($3).

(NOTE: At the time of this article's publication, the Syrup Room was on hiatus, indeed, bringing itself up to code. They're slated to reopen Apr. 28th with a performance by Oneida while come May, there are plans for a Man Man and Akron/Family double-billing and, enticingly, the venues very first play.)

KINGS COUNTY, 286 Siegel St., (718) 418-8823.

I am not about to start testing this thesis, but there must be only one rusty metal door in Bushwick you can yank open to be greeted by the sound of Young MC. What's even more surprising is that the inside of King's County is neat, comfortable and not tacky. This is a deadpan whiskey-drinking bar. There is some unidentifiable animals horned skull atop the dark, ornate back bar. There is an alley out back for smoking. And the bar stools weigh a ton, offering purchase to the tipsy with a seeming "Whoa, guy. Steady there." On this particular Friday night, only a handful of females were present, but girls need not feel intimidated. The vibe is one of honest, innocent, inebriation. Friends check up on one another here. As for the booze, my companion was served a vodka cranberry so tall as to make her say, "OH," ($6) and I was served a murderously ample glass of Jack ($5). The iPod started to play some German techno, but then skipped abruptly to Arrested Development, and I lost track of any conversation after that.

LIFE CAFE, 983 Flushing Ave., (718) 386-1133.

Our next task, finding worthy food, would have even level-headed people running willy-nilly for the L. But you're going to bear with us. -- at least because, out here, you are afraid of willy-nillying yourself into derelict outer Bed-Stuy.

Now, I believe most people have seen The Muppets Take Manhattan, so most everyone should appreciate that if, sometimes, a diner features offbeat or "zany" table service or even a kitchen that spews greasy smoke, it must be in the spirit of family. Bushwicks Life Café (by the same folks who brought you the Life Café of Rent fame in the East Village) is noteworthy not because it offers an elegant dining experience, but because the whole gang is there, noon and night.

Walking by at 3 p.m. on a Friday, I found the bar packed. Returning for a late weeknight supper, the tables seemed to fill up as the hour drifted from conventional dinnertime (dinner is served until midnight). And yes, there was kitchen smoke, and yes, the waiter very nearly stole our ketchup to give to another table who got their food before us, but I felt a living portrait of the neighborhood was arranged around me. Skinny-jeans guy who wears sunglasses indoors; two beautiful, dark-haired girls swimming in vintage sweaters; a long-time resident in NYPD T-shirt and Yankees cap.

The food was perfectly fine. The mega burrito ($6) and the mucho macho nachos ($8.75) are a little melodramatically named -- both left me and my company un poco peakish, but here, cheapness is tempered by the availability of things like tempeh, seitan and organic mesclun. And there are specials, anyway. And the bar is dirt cheap; a can of PBR is two bucks. Cue Ben Folds. We can be happy underground.

THE WRECK ROOM, 940 Flushing Ave., (718) 418-6347.

If Bushwick were a youngster and its mom were buying him bars at SEARS, its mom would have bought the Wreck Room with a pacifying, "You'll grow into it." Wee little Bushwick might have protested. The space is in mimic of a large basement revamped for entertaining, with dark wood paneling and shimmery Art Deco wallpaper. There is a big amp-on-a-stick through which someones favorite music blares, two pool tables and a Playboy pinball machine. The pun is completed with a wrecked car theme that starts with slouchy-comfy car seat benches (I'm not going back without an underage date) and ends with random Cadillac grills adorning the walls. All in all, it is boxy and a little ungainly.

In March, however, rock promotion king pin Mr. Frank Wood arrived with a three-ring circus of loud acts, hatching the phrase, "mini Ottos Shrunken Head." In this capacity, the Wreck Room could be a star and could well turn this block into a destination.

The drink menu is in the same spirit as Life Cafe. Grab a cheap 22, or spring for one of the areas rare luxuries like Guinness on tap or Chimay ($7).

POTION CAFE, 248 McKibben St., (718) 628-5470.

Turning back toward Williamsburg takes us up Bushwick Avenue, which, with its regular foot traffic, is our one contestant for the title of "main drag." A right on McKibben leads to one of the neighborhoods main hubs of colonization, a pair of massive converted factories. With their hanging flags and Christmas lights and emanating Radiohead, they give the impression of a pair of misplaced college dorms. The communal coffee shop, Potion, is not so much like a cafeteria as it is like a stop back at Mom and Dads to be offered a bite to eat and to be reminded what "clean" looks like.

This, our last stop, is hipster Bushwick at its best. It's cheap, friendly, low-key and faux-socialist, but also sanitary, well behaved and high-quality; the hummus is homemade, the art on the walls is actually good, the music is appropriate and not begging for attention. The small cozy space begs you tread lightly lest you be asked to go play outside.

Two big, hummus-slathered bagels (one with tomato and emmentaler -- a veritable sandwich, I say!) and two mugs of orange spice black tea (by Stash) cost $8.50, at which I scoffed and threw a 40 percent tip. Thanks, folks! See you next weekend.

Visiting any of these fine, aforementioned establishments will take a little more planning than Mapquest can afford. The L train is truly unpredictable on weekends -- during the day it is often shutdown, after 11:30 p.m. it is usually shutdown.

If you prefer, you can experience Bushwick lite within blocks of the Montrose stop. Joe Mamas (285 Bushwick Ave.) and No Name Cyber Cafe (253 Bushwick Ave.) are pleasant, easily accessible and comfortingly accompanied by vintage-y stores.

Thom Yorke - Eraser

Thom Yorke - The Eraser

The legend of Thom Yorke grows with his new solo Album The Eraser. Yeah we said it, legend, the whinny prick from England is a modern day John Lennon. He's on that level my friends, but really why are we preaching to choir? Back to the new record, which will be released July 11th on XL. The record has leaked and ended up on countless blogs and file sharing services like DC++.
"It was fun and quick to do. Inevitably it is more beats and electronics. But it's songs. Yes it's a record! No it's not a Radiohead record." -Thom
We don't feel too sorry about the leaked record, because us radiohead fans actually buy multiple copies of each record the members release. We are like the mice running around our Bushwick apartments, starving for any little scrap we can find. So go buy the album in stores or on itunes like the good little radiohead fans I know you are.

The tracklisting for The Eraser:
"The Eraser"
"Analyze"
"The Clock"
"Black Swan"
"Skip Divided"
"Atoms For Peace"
"And It Rained All Night"
