Where is The Bushwick I Used to Know?

Where is The Bushwick I Used to Know?

I've lived in Bushwick for just about fifteen years now, and boy has it done a real turn around. The area is nowhere near what it used to be years hence. Broadway is being 'renovated' like crazy with stores and apartments (Can you imagine apartment rents being as high as almost $2,000, and houses selling for $250,000-$850,000?). Also, Caucasian-Americans are starting to move back into the area (Houses that are one-hundred years old and 'older' going for $500,000 and up), so you're seeing alot of 'for sale' signs, because either the blacks or hispanics (There are alot of different hispanic groups purchasing homes with the help of members of their families. Very seldom do you see 'one' person renting an apartment any more, it's usually two or more persons now, mainly because they can't afford the rents.) are moving out of state, or are moving to another country. The area is 'picking up', but you wonder, how long the 'diversity' that existed 'before' the 'renovation' will actually last? "The Bushwick We Used To Know"!

Kirsten Powers: I Think I'm in Love

Kirsten Powers

I think I'm in love.

Can any of you stomach watching TV Newshows anymore? Sitting and watching both sides of the political spectrum boldly going nowhere is tough to swallow. Oddly I've turned to a Fox News analyst for some much needed inspiration and hope. Kirsten Powers really just got on the map last month, when she caused hate spewing right winger Ann Coulter ( see clip below) to walk off the set of Hannity and Comes. What has made Powers such a joy to watch, is her presentation of solid Liberal points. She won't hold onto an ideal or action if it's wrong. In that way, it makes it very hard for her to be attacked. Kirsten Powers is not perfect, but she presents her points better than any liberal analyst on television or radio. None of her cohorts match her sensible and honest commentary. Thank you to this fellow Brooklyn Liberal who is enjoyable and enlightening to watch. She's definitely worth checking out if you are in the need of a little light at the end of the TV news tunnel.

Rapture - Pieces of the People We Love

Rapture - Pieces of the People We Love

Picked up the new Rapture CD, Pieces of the People We Love, over the weekend. Not as edgy, dark, and moody as their last release. This CD will be used for, washing the floors day. Still upbeat, but a little happier than before they are definitely going for a bigger audience here. and I can't really blame them. I'd much rather see these guys all over TV and magazines over Good Charlotte or Simple Plan. This CD should widen their fan base from coked out hipsters at the Royal Oak.

Peanut Butter Wolf - His Vinyl Weighs a Ton

Peanut Butter Wolf
My Vinyl Weighs a Ton

One of my favorite albums from one of my favorite labels. If you don't own at least 3 or 4 records from Stones Throw, you are doing a disservice to the music community. Remember, you are either with us or against us. Released back in 1999, this record is still a good introduction to turntables and indiehop. This is music you are listening to in those swank Thai restaurants around Bedford. You know, the music that helps that micro-waved but oh so tasty curry, go down so so nice. So until we have those places here in Bushwick, you'll have to order out and buy this record.

Bonga - Angola 72

Bonga - Angola 72

Just when you've though you've heard it all...someone says to you "I've got something I think you'll like...".
This was the case for me recently when a friend pulled this CD out at 2 am for a late night listening session.

Bonga's is a soft revolutionary. His music speaks of his love of Angola life and struggles. He was kicked out of the country in 1972, where he moved to Holland to record this brilliant debut. Check out the MP3s I have posted and I think you'll be buying the entire album off itunes before the night is over.
