Bushwick Essentials: Stereolab

Bushwick Essentials: Stereolab
Emperor Tomato Ketchup

There are those defining moments we all experience that shape our musical future. One of mine took place in June 1996 when the new Stereolab record of the moment,
Emperor Tomato Ketchup, was introduced to me in a Seattle Apartment in the U-district. I didn't know anything about the band, once again proving how important having friends who introduce you to essential music are. I was told to go into a room where two giant Pioneer tower speakers were awaiting. "Sit down, relax, and come out when the record ends", were the instructions given. Don't you just love friends like that, especially the friends that have excellent musical taste. You know that this is an important exciting moment in your life, and you just try to savor it.
This record is the highlight of Stereolab's long and continuing sixteen year career. Vox organs, Moog synthesizers, french/english layered vocals, deep bass, all mush together to put you in a futuristic, happier world. So to that friend who played a role what I listen to today, and to all the people who see the need in sharing what is beautiful to them, I say thank you. Keep doing it...

Bushwick Essentials: Blue States

Bushwick Essentials: Blue States
Nothing Changes Under The Sun

For those of you waiting for the next Portishead album that may never come, this album may ease the frustration. Nothing Changes Under The Sun has probably been on countless "chill out" mixes the last 5 years, and hopefully many more to come. Ok, so the bass driven female vocals formula is played out, but when it's done right does it really matter to you? I could hear Moon Safari, Dummy, and Another Fictionalized History done repeatedly if they are created with care. This is the first record from the the Thievery Corporation's label, and their best. The band has since progressed into another musical direction with good results, but this was quite a great way to start their career. This is definitely an essential record to own for fans of the albums mentioned above.

Saturday Syrup Room Show Moved

Saturday Syrup Room Show Moved

Note: Those of you stuck around here for the holiday will have to go a bit further for a show this Saturday. The Dirty Projectors show scheduled for the Syrup Room has been moved to Glasslands in Williamsburg. From Todd P's website it sounds like he didn't want to move it, so it's just a problem with the venue here most likely.

SATURDAY 11/25 @ Glasslands

Lineup:
Dirty Projectors
Ecstatic Sunshine
Beautiful Weekend

289 Kent Ave @ S 1st St
Williamsburg
8pm/$8

The show will still be a good one, and isn't that far away. Let's just hope the L Train is up this weekend.

Bushwick Essentials: Jessamine

Bushwick Essentials: Jessamine
The Long Arm of Coincidence

I walked into the Archive the other day and heard a familiar sound from the past. Jessamine was one of the mysterious bands my friends and I had placed into a very unique category. Anyone who knew of them was given special treatment. That is why when I heard the droned out bass and spacey vocals of Dawn Smithson I was instantly taken back. Sometimes you put bands away for awhile only to rediscover them to new delight. That is the case here, as I have been revisited their 4 cd catalog with renewed excitement.

I'm going to have a lot of Jessamine related posts in the upcoming weeks. Today we'll start with the album I first did, The Long Arm of Coincidence. I was introduced to this record in Ravenna (Seattle) at a Taco Bell drivethru around 2am. My friends and I were hitting up the horrible fast food establishment to satisfy our late night munchie cravings. KEXP was blasting through the cheap Volvo speakers, and a Police car was following us through the drivethru. The was the perfect setting when the DJ got on the mic and said "I've got something perfect for this time of night....". Then the slow bass began to creep in, and we were treated to what would become one of our all time favorite bands.

Karen Dalton - In My Own Time

Karen Dalton - In My Own Time

I'm a little more cautious with old folk reissues recommended by pitchfork after the whole Vashti Bunyan fiasco. That record still haunts my apartment to this day.
The Karen Daulton reissue got a 9.0 from pitchfork, and features some nice alternate takes from the original sessions. In My Own Time, was recorded at Bearsville studios, and produced by Bob Dylan's former bass player Harvey Brooks. Worth buying at itunes, but I wouldn't give it quite as high a rating as pitchfork.

Paper Marbling Workshop Dec. 2nd/3rd

Upcoming Workshop @ Office Ops

You are invited to a paper marbling workshop on Saturday, December 2 or Sunday, December 3 at noon until 3:00pm. It will be at OfficeOps in Brooklyn right off of the L train on 57 Thames St. The cost is $15/person. This covers all materials. Please bring a towel and something to carry home your masterpieces. Suggestions include a plastic folder, mailing tube, etc.

"But I am not that artistic. What if I can't do it or I mess up?" or "I am a professional artist. Is this class going to be appropriate?" Answer: On this site, you can see marbled paper created after only a single class. The one thing people say when they make marbled paper is, "Wow! I can't believe I can do this!" For professional artists, I can give you some space to experiment or show you some new techniques. This is a supportive, friendly class. Judgement is left at the door. ANYONE over 13 is welcome.

NYPD Making Money, Not Keeping You Safe

Police are cracking down on "illegal" shows in Bushwick.

As if they don't have anything better to do(they do, keeping us save), the police cracked down on two of the shows last week in Bushwick. At 3rd Ward on Saturday, there were fines passed out to the promoters, people working the bar and door, and a band member.

I have mixed feeling about the recent crackdowns. I understand the risks of having shows in alternate venues, and the valid point that technically they are illegal. Why then is it so hard to get the permits to become legal? This area is the testing grounds for experimental music and art, and that's the way we want it. It's one of the lures of living in these neighborhoods.

The Police Department makes a lot of money on this, so you know that is why they are doing it. They don't get paid extra to keep us from getting mugged, and robbed (which a lot of us have been), but it's sexy for them to crash these events.

Fucking bastards.
