Bushwick Essentials: Stereolab
Emperor Tomato Ketchup
There are those defining moments we all experience that shape our musical future. One of mine took place in June 1996 when the new Stereolab record of the moment,
Emperor Tomato Ketchup, was introduced to me in a Seattle Apartment in the U-district. I didn't know anything about the band, once again proving how important having friends who introduce you to essential music are. I was told to go into a room where two giant Pioneer tower speakers were awaiting. "Sit down, relax, and come out when the record ends", were the instructions given. Don't you just love friends like that, especially the friends that have excellent musical taste. You know that this is an important exciting moment in your life, and you just try to savor it.
This record is the highlight of Stereolab's long and continuing sixteen year career. Vox organs, Moog synthesizers, french/english layered vocals, deep bass, all mush together to put you in a futuristic, happier world. So to that friend who played a role what I listen to today, and to all the people who see the need in sharing what is beautiful to them, I say thank you. Keep doing it...
