Heaven Awaits

Heaven Awaits

In troubled times we look above, and ask ourselves, does anyone up there give a fuck?
This twisted game hurts for real.

and yes we feel.

Let's hope there is a better world beyond the dirty streets we habitat.

High Places Interview

Precious things belong in
High Places
Robert Barber and Mary Pearson

Last week
Pitchfork gave your EP an 8.2 rating. That had to be a boost to the moral.
How many times have mom and dad read this?

Mary: I don't know if any of our parents actually saw this review. But my mom was pretty excited when we were on the front page of the Hometown Gazette in Plainwell, MI for performing with the elementary school kids there.
Rob: Well considering that my Father just asked me 5 minutes ago what Yahoo was, I have a sneaky suspicion his Pitchfork game is pretty off these days.

BiB: What are your thoughts on the Bushwick/East Williamsburg area shows and vibe?

Rob: Shows are always fun, and it seems like lately they can go down more easily without the cops showing up... But I always get lost when driving the van to shows there. We live in Bed Stuy/ Clinton Hill though. On a bike I'm ok, because I can ride the wrong way down streets, but driving...not as rad. The streets were planned like a plate of spaghetti.

BiB: You have played a lot of shows for Todd P in the area, a few of which I have seen, and seen to have a nice relationship
with him as a promoter. What is about his shows that just seem to be a cut above the rest?

Mary: I try to always remember what it felt like to be underage and unable to see my favorite bands play. One of the best things about Todd's shows is that they are always all ages.
Rob: Honestly, most of his shows that we play are due to our out of town friends coming through and asking us to play with them. Also, the last show we played before tour, we set up for some traveling friends and Todd is always super helpful with promoting and logistical stuff.

BiB: You guys have been on several tours already. You just returned from a tour that included
Salt Lake and Denver. How did did your music go over there?

Mary: I think Denver is officially one of our favorite places to play in the States now. The kids there dance harder than even Baltimore kids.
Rob: Salt Lake has an amazing couple that owns a book store called Red Light Books, with a rad basement for shows. I feel that kids there are going to start taking notice and a scene is going to get awesome there too.

Bib: Are you guys traveling in van? What passes the time, and makes that bearable?

Rob: Yep. We travel in a van. Really juvenile potty humour helps get through the long drives. Getting comfy with farts helps too. Two vegans can actually get quite bass heavy after awhile.
Mary: Our last tour was with Soft Circle, and Hisham somehow managed to do these really intricate drawings while riding in the back of the van. I don't know how he does that...

Bib: With such a nice start to your musical career, do you have specific goals you want to achieve using
the band? Places you want to play, or creating your own "white album"?

Mary: We love to tour, and we hope to start playing overseas a bunch.
Rob: We are putting out a picture disc next and then a couple splits and a full length. I really like recording. Playing is still pretty scary for me, but the traveling and friend sessions are totally worth it.

Bib: How can we purchase your EP? Is it on Itunes or any other digital store?

Rob: Not sure if the 7" is gone, but it's probably pretty close. You can check with ancientalmanac.com or insound. Our picture disc will be out in a few weeks and we'll have it at shows.

Thank you both for taking some time to answer some questions for us.

Catch High Places fun live show next week.

Bushwick Essentials: Caribou

Bushwick Essentials: Caribou

Andorra is Daniel V. Snaith's latest under the Caribou moniker. This album is nothing like
it's beautiful predecessors The Milk of Human Kindness (2005), and Up in Flames (2006) but that's ok considering what Daniel has accomplished here. Andorra is filled with beautiful layered Brian Wilson-esque vocals over beds of 60's LSD pop. This is a candidate for our year end top ten of 2007 for sure.

Ulrich Schnauss - Goodbye

Ulrich Schnauss - Goodbye

German electronic artist Ulrich Schnauss's Goodbye is the last in a trilogy that includes Far Away Trains Passing By and A Strangely Isolated Place. Both are essential albums of melodic electronica, and Goodbye tops them off perfectly. This may be goodbye to this era of Ulrich Schnauss, but we still have a whole new world to look forward to.

MLB TV is a Rip off and Scam

MLB TV Rip Off
Beware of the fine Print
They ripped me off for 14 dollars recently.
I love the service itself, being able to watch MLB games online for a price. All that was gravy.
What you don't know is that they try and trap you by automatically renewing your service. This can get very tricky when you are trying to place your initial order. I unchecked the box that said automatically renew, so I thought I was clear. I only ordered one month of the service. A month and a half later after I get back from vacation, I see I was charged again. This 14 dollars also put me over my account at my bank, so I as charged an additional 32 dollars for overdraft. I called the MLB "customer service" "people" to try and explain what happened. I was send to various "people" who would just read their instructions and kept repeating their mantra, "we only offer refunds after 5 days, sir you are 10 days into that cycle". They couldn't get it through their heads that I was mislead from the get go when I made sure the renew box was left unchecked. That was for the yearly subscriptions you see, but if you are ordering month by month you can see how that would get confusing. So i was charged for a service I never watched (after my first month was over).
The final word was with a "manager" who said he could do nothing.
So i tell him this "sir i love your service, ordered it the entire year last year, and only could afford one month so far this year. I will order it again when I can afford it, just take off the month I didn't want, and I will return as a customer. I was misled by your ordering process, it was a real mistake." He just kept saying no".
"So you are willing to lose me as a customer forever over 14 dollars?" he replied "yes".

Jiffy Lube Fraud and Rip-offs

The Jiffy Lube Scam

These fast food like oil change stations are perfect lure for scams and rip offs. I've had several friends work there and warn me, and yesterday I still took the bait. You probably don't need the Air Filters, and extra service things they ill try and offer you. They may show you a grotesque dirty air filter that, gasp, just came from your car! Often these are fake, and are used on many customers. Don't be fooled by these con artists, which are everywhere, even in Brooklyn. ;-)

Bosque Brown live in Abilene

Bosque Brown live in Abilene

Bosque Brown / Doug Burr / Sarah Jaffe (w/ Jonathan Clark)

The indie band Bosque Brown headlined a nice smaller show at Monks coffee house in Abilene Texas last Saturday. Sarah Jaffe opened with a nice set leaving us wanting more, her voice and guitar worked perfectly in unison. While Doug Burr played a decent set, he didn't get the memo, and stayed on WAY TOO LONG. Doug should have realized the setting, and played a shorter set, it would have helped him not stand out like a sore thumb. Ouch it did hurt, for one hour!
Bosque Brown, a five piece headed by Mara Miller, closed the set with a nice mix of old and new songs. They are a rather young band with only a few recordings available to this point. Their first album is up on itunes.
