Another New Portishead Song Appears on You Tube
@ ATP
According to this set list, the new song below is either Hunter or Mystic. Could be a working title or an abbreviation.
Either way, it's the slowest songs of the new stuff.
Thanks to You Tube user Polar1One!
You came through big time.

New Portishead ATP Review

From the Wirewool blog:
http://thewirewool.blogspot.com
The Gas Giants are members of Portishead's band doing pre-Portishead warm-up bits covering Ennio Morriccone tunes and the like, which is obviously very good. Then Portishead, and that new album cannot come out fast enough. The new material sounds dark, obtuse and pretty far removed from hip-hop. The old songs are all classics for a reason, something driven home by the impassioned performance of Beth Gibbons, who seemed to be shy on stage, but gave her all in the vocals. I'd go see them every night of the week if I could. Obvious to say, but it was the highlight of the festival for me.

New Portishead
ATP Review
There was Geoff Barrow, in a state of high agitation. A technical cock-up had meant that Portishead's turntablist wizard had spent most of the soundcheck forced to re-program his drums. 'The feedback's been terrible,' he said. 'Although it might be better to do 'Glory Box' like that...'
If any band could survive the association with This Life and that stigma of BBC coffee-table cosiness, it's Portishead, although no-one could claim that the trio - Geoff, guitarist Adrian Utley and singer Beth Gibbons - have been keeping their accountants busy. Their debut, Dummy, came out in 1994 and their eponymous second three years later. More than a decade on, they've finally finished a newie, which is due in the spring. Last night offered the first chance to hear what they've been up to.
The Centre Stage arena filled up following a brief performance from the Gas Giants, spoilt slightly for this observer by the old fellow nearby playing along with his harmonica. Then the sight of Beth - icy Beth, with that most extraordinary voice, who has only ever given one interview - laughing as she came on stage.
What to say? The band were nervous and at times it was hard to get a handle on the new songs, not least because Beth's voice demands perfect concentration and there were plenty of numpties talking throughout. The set caught fire when the band, as it were, rocked out and the old classics - 'Sour Times', 'Numb', yes, 'Glory Box' - sounded magnificent.
Oh, there was barely any feedback, although at one point, Geoff did have a problem when the smoke machine blew so much smoke that he couldn't see his drum pads.
Later, in the grim surroundings of the Irish Bar, he confessed he'd been so nervous earlier in the day that he'd walked three times round Minehead. 'But the thing is, we really enjoyed it. Which I don't think we ever did before,' he said.
In fact, the highlight of the show was when Beth mistimed her entry into a song, and made a joke of it.

Portishead ATP Day 2

Portishead ATP Day 2
Finally a few more reviews are coming in. Where is the video and audio people!?
From Strangeglue.com
One of the most indelible memories of my early years is watching Beth Gibbons and Portishead perform live at the Roseland Theatre in New York, smoking a cigarette, while belting out note perfect renditions of ‘Glory Box’ et al.
So skip forward ten years, and Portishead are not just content with performing live for the first time in a decade. They are immersed in creating memories for their legions of fans who have flocked to see them. And how they succeed….
Portishead are simply sublime. It doesn’t matter whether they are playing material from Dummy, Portishead or their as yet untitled third album, you’d have to be Julian Cope not to be captivated by the imagery, the stage presence and the aura that is Portishead.
Portishead completed their first full set in nearly a decade. Beth, clearly overcome by the reaction of the audience, jumped down to thank them. Then realising she was a bit short to climb back onstage, she had to seek help from those around her to get back up.
Thanking the crowd once more, she said: “I’m sorry if we played a note wrong or whatever, but thank you so much for being so nice to us.”
Needless to say the appreciation was roared back towards her direction. Time has not changed Portishead, but they have evolved into a band so big, so important, that it’s nice to see that they haven’t become arrogant and pretentious. Maybe they could sit down and have a chat with Julian Cope.
From a concert attendee:
Just back from ATP. Saw Portishead's second performance last night.
It was a mix of new songs and tracks from the first two albums. The sound was amazing, definitely the best noise ever to be heard in Minehead, much richer sounding than the NY gig for exampe. The new tracks take the band in a different direction - definitely not one for fondue parties. Difficult to evaluate on first hearing, the general theme was Geoff playing industrial drums sounds, various deep synth and guitar movements in the background and a distorted Beth over the top. It will be interesting to hear how it sounds on CD. It's a brave move for the band. They are without doubt masters at what they were doing a decade ago (no other artist has come close to the sound of "Dummy" or "Portishead", in my opinion) at least live their newer material verges on a cool alternative rock sound - a much more populated genre. There was one new more downbeat acoustic number, for me it didn't quite capture beauty of "out of season". Still, it was an amazing gig, and a rapturous crowd. Roll on 2008.
Video is coming out now!

Radiohead - In Rainbows Bonus Disc

Radiohead
In Rainbows Bonus Disc
"MK1"
The connecting point between the main disc and this bonus one. Thom is
humming to music that was used in Videotape. Pretty, short and sweet, a fitting intro.
"Down is the New Up"
This is going to be a lot people's favorite track on Disc 2. There is a part of the song where
Thom sounds like Bono in "Lemon". This had to have been close
to making In Rainbows, there was a lot of work put into it. The strings
are absolutely gorgeous. One could argue this might have been a more fitting closer
than Videotape.
"Go Slowly"
Straight off a Mum or Sigur Ros album? The beginning of the song is absolutely beautiful led by a Xylophone presumably by Jonny. Could be the cousin to Wolf at the Door.

Another highlight.
"Mk2"
Weird instrumental piece probably made by Johnny. In an album setting it works if you are listening to it as one piece. I doubt it will get many listens outside that.
"Last Flowers"
Created during the OK Computer sessions, this one has been much discussed and hyped since
we knew of it's existence.
It's not the Karma Police masterpiece we were led to believe it might be. The vocals are rough, and it seems like it was all recorded very quickly. The piano led track does have it's moments though, and won't be something you skip over. Just imagine Thom over at your house playing you this late at night in your den. Has that nice homey feel to it. In that way it works quite well.
"Up on the Ladder"
Starting off with the great line "I'm stuck in the tardis" we are led by a steady kick drum, and nice percussion throughout. Thom's vocals are especially strong here.
This is one of the biggest surprises on this Bonus Disc. Consider this the Reckoner of Disc 2.

"Bangers and Mash"
Frantic, noisy, and swampy are all adjectives that will be tossed around with this one.
Jonny's nasty guitars are all over this track, and mix well with the funky bass lines. Expect to see this one played on tour a lot next year. It just has that live
vibe to it.
"4 Minute Warning"
Sounds apocalyptic, and seems to start off with the world coming to end. Quickly
the tone changes to a first sounds you might hear during the new beginning. Meek,
unsure, but relieved. It's stripped down from the live version, but it seems to work with these songs. A good closer for Disc 2.
Order your beautiful Disc Box from www.radiohead.com
It's put together well, and is even worth the hefty 80 dollar price tag.
