Pearl Jam, Ten [Deluxe Edition]
The first thing I thought when I put
Ten on was, wow it's been a long
time since I've listened to this album. A flood of memories will hit you, and
probably bring you back to a wonderful time known as the early 90's.
You know, our generation's 60's, except it only lasted 2-3 years.
The packaging is nice, and I'm happy this is a normal sided LP.
I hate when vinyl only has three songs on a side, and you have 4 sides.
A,B,C,D = too much!I don't want to get up every 13 minutes to flip it over. It's called a long player
for a reason.
I first listened to the original mix, and that is what brought back the flood of memories.
However, the second mix by Brendan O'Brien is far more fresh, and enjoyable. It's what I keep going back to. Of course they turned up the loudness on the mix, and bring the vocals out front and center, but a lot of the songs sound more powerful with this treatment. "Release" sounds like something you would hear on today's alternative station. The only difference is it doesn't suck.
By clearing up the "muddiness" of the original mix, you can see into the heart of the beast.
What you hear is a band that had a good thing going between them. There are some so so moments on this disc. The grungy 90's that most other bands did around that time is heard on "Porch, and "Jeremy doesn't hold up well after all these years. It just sounds a little whinny and
repetitive at this point. While "Alive" still sounds relevant after all these years, and
sounds especially powerful on both remastered records. Strong sleepers like "Oceans" and "Black" are a couple of reasons why Pearl Jam stood out from your typical rock grunge band.
These songs have a timeless feel, and outlive the era. Thank you for taking me back, if only
for 30 mins here and there. This is our generations music, and it's becoming classic.
