Southside Festival 2011
Tuttlingen, Germany

After 4 hours of driving on the Autobahn we arrived in the middle of nowhere.
A small farming town over run by a festival 5 times it's size.

We were led to a parking area that covered fields and fields of green (soon
to be mud). The long walk up the entrance was filled with excitement, and
curiosity. The festival was alive and well starting the parking area. The atmosphere was full of energy. Everyone carrying their tents, coolers, and clothes needed for the 3 day event. By the time we got to the camping area we were overwhelmed. Now where can we find a space? The first band had hit one of the 4 stages 2 hours ago. We soon discovered from asking, and seeing ourselves there wasn't much room at all. Every square inch of the campsite had been taken. Mental note, arrive the night before next year. After an hour of walking around carrying gear on every available limb we found a crack. A hole between two tents just big enough for our small tent. This spot ended up being a life saver later on.

After quickly setting up, and treating ourselves to a Pils we headed for the entrance to the music stages. On the way as we walked down a runway for planes we noticed the madness around us. "this is crazy" was said at least 3 times before we entered the gates.

No time to spare Warpaint was setting up as we showed our festival wristband to the security.

Warpaint - Saw them in LA opening up for the XX last year. Their live show really bring out the music in full force. The rhythm section is powerful, and delivers a punch that they haven't captured yet on their records. Although the band was obviously jet legged, or just down right tired they grooved through a nice set that the Germans enjoyed. I feel like they could have benefited from a slightly different set list, but they left us wanting more with "undertow". They will be back.

Flogging Molly - One of the best things about these European music festivals is the variety. You can go from electronic to heavy metal, to folk within a stage or two.
We ran from the end of Warpaint's set to the energy that was brewing on the main stage. Flogging had the crowd dancing, and roaring to each anthem they sang.
This set is also of note because this is where the rain started. Less than 1 hour into the music the rain started, and didn't really stop for another 10 hours.
At first it seemed to ignite the crowd here, as we all were dancing and singing in the rain. Soon is became apparent that this downpour was going to change all of us.

Making it safely back to our tents, we regrouped as the rain belted the tent.
Only one act could get us our of our safety net, and into the storm.

Bright Eyes - Started at 12:30 pm. It was cold, and the rain only intensified before their scheduled slot. Someone we managed to get the energy, and willpower to force ourselves to run to their set. They were playing in a tent, that was one plus.
The rain had turned the grounds into mud at this point. We were screaming, laughing, and trying not to fall down as we walked into the entrance.
Our clothes were now soaked, shoes ruined, and pants full of mud. Bright Eyes made
these minor inconveniences. They treated us to a powerful performance that was met with a poor response. The band was on fire, clearly enjoying themselves, but sadly their energy was not matched by the crowd. Not to say the crowd wouldn't enjoy them but I felt they would give other festival performances greater less deserved responses.

Elbow - After what feels like days of rain Elbow set the next days seeing the clouds lift, and rain finally cease (at least for a moment). Guy's voice is perfect live.
His stage banter upbeat, this was the perfect band to receive the best weather.
When they closed the set with "On a Day Like This" it was celebrated by festival goers for multiple reasons. None of which that it's a great anthem.

Eels - Now in the same place we saw Bright Eyes the night before the Eels give
us a far less inspired performance, but get a far better response. First off this band sounds nothing like it does on record. I don't want to hear honky tonk from the Eels. We left disappointed in the set list, performance, and the crowd.

Arcade Fire - Strangely enough I've never seen this band live despite sharing an office with their management, and being a fan early on. They put on a great show as expected with great energy, and an outstanding visual display. The arcade movie theater set up went perfectly with the music. The video clips that played with the songs added to the music. Mountains Beyond Mountains was pedestal by blogged when the suburbs came out. I found it ok at first listen. Now after seeing it live it truly hit home. This track is a winner.

Portishead - It had been 12 years since I last saw Portishead. It was in Germany no doubt at another festival up north. They have only released one album since then, and have no doubts remained in the shadows. Beth usually says very little, as she did on this night, which only
adds to their mystic. Tonight they gave us a nice set list touching on a few songs from each album. The highlight being the slowed down version of "Wandering Stars" and "The Rip".
We were on the rail for this show, and Beth came down to give high fives, and hugs to the front row. I know I made some contact with her. I pointed to my P shirt, and she smiled. Love that lady.

Lykke Li
One of those performers I've been dying to see for ages (along with Robyn who I have yet to see yet). Finally in a smoked filled tent I find sanctuary from the rain, and bad music outside. Lykke is great live. The music has tons of percussion, and sounds even better live that on record. Her voice is so powerful live, and she is a performer in every sense of the word. She is not as good without her band though.
They truly feed off each other in a special way. Great set tonight filled with older hit songs to the new stuff. All of it sounds good live.

Southside Festival

It's been over 10 years since I've see Portishead live. It's all coming full circle.
Sometime late in the summer of 1998 I found myself wandering around Köln wondering
where my life was going. I had just gotten off the plane from Seattle, and things
seems hopeless. I was to start school at an American university in two days. That night
at the Bizarre festival I made some german friends, and found myself in a VW bus with strangers. I managed to make my way to the stage just in time for Portishead set. PJ Harvey was finishing up, and was enjoyable as well.

Flash forward to 2011, and again I find myself here about to see Portishead again at
a german music festival.

Southside seems to be a good antithesis to Rock am Ring. Less Rawk! More music.
This year's line up includes Portishead, the Sounds, Elbow, Arcade Fire, Eels, Chemical Brothers, Warpaint, An Horse, Lykke li, the Kills, etc

Can't wait to meet some new german friends, share some drinks, and laughs in the camping grounds. It's funny how life comes full circle. Here we are...
everything ends only to start again.

Why do we give our lives over to people who don't inspire?
People, and things who down play, down grade, and suck creativity from our being...

In the movies we watch. Is anything original anymore? There are so many remakes,
sequels, ripped off rehashed ideas it's really hard to get excited about them anymore.
Now I believe that creativity still lives, and breathes below the surface. For some
reason this force is denied. Either by the creator or by someone with the power
to squash this.

I have come to realize that I give way too much of my time over to things
that don't lift me up, and help me to progress. Now I don't feel like you
need to have everything in your life be original, and life changing. Over stimulation seems to have very negative affects as well. With the tv I watch, the sports I follow,
the magazines I read, the movies I watch...basically how I spend lots of my time.
Are these things helping me reach my goals in life?

The short answer is no, and it's damn time I do something about it.

was rough to stomach. It got my thinking of an NFL injury I saw probably 20 years ago. Any old memory you might have might just be available on You Tube. I typed in "horrible nfl injuries", and sure enough it was the second video that came up.

Portishead are back! I'm going to rant about it.

Our dream like gods of musical mind fucking are back. Portishead delivers on many levels.
They are immune to the nature of the music around them. The music of the time doesn't have to mean the most popular. Portishead speak for me. Radiohead do as well.
I've been saying for years the two bands need to tour together. More head is never
a bad thing. This would be a tour for music lovers everywhere.

Anyways, P announced today via their official web site that they will be playing live again in 2011. They will curate ATP for a second time over a weekend at the end of July. They will also tour in Europe around that time, and come to states for the first tour in over 10 years in the fall.

Bringing back an old favorite band got me thinking today. I remembered the first time I saw
Portishead in 98. I remembered where I was then, and where I thought my life was going.
This depressed me a little because I realize that things hadn't turned out even close to as planned. You realize you are at a life crossroads, and have been stuck there over 3 years.

Sometimes you need to take control of your life from the natural forces causing you

to go too fast. It's ok to slow down, to pause, and ask why.

Society pushes you along at a very fast pace early on. We aren't given much time to reflect before we are pushed on to something else. That is is why it's ok now in your 30's as many of my fellow aging hipsters are, to put a hold on life. Hit the pause button. Ask yourself...

where am I going?

Is this really where I want to go. Is this even close to the right direction?

If you do nothing life tends to float you down stream with the ebb and flow of sleep.

It's ok to get off that cart, and make a stand. It's ok to be honest to yourself.

Those things inside you are beautiful, and special. Don't try to be like everyone else.

You put something out there on You Tube, and you'll get all types of feedback.
Some positive, making you feel on top of the world. People will tell you that your video was inspiring, and they loved it. Others, will call you some hack who has
no talent at all. You have to be ready for anything when you put yourself out there.

Though, to do nothing is to fail. Take what's special to you out of the dark.

"Something" was NOT written about Pattie Boyd

Time to set the record straight.

"George's intense love for Patti inspired him to write the song Something".
This is something I've read so much in the past 20 years you almost believe it to be true(even when you know it's not). The more times you hear something the more real it becomes. It is not though, and I want to set the record straight once and for all.

Even some Beatle nuts get this wrong. Patti Boyd, who has had at least two legendary songs written about her "Layla", and "Wonderful Tonight", often get's another famous song wrongfully credited to her. People assume because George Harrison was married to Patti that "Something" was written for her. In fact is was NOT about her. There is some good speculation as to who it really is about. Officially George said it's about no one in particular. According to Patti's book George did have several affairs around the time this song was written. "Attracts me like no other lover" could be about one of his women. The only thing we do know is that "Something" was not written about Patti.

This is not a slap in the face to Patti, but I'm tired of reading that the song was about her when it's not. Even in Boyd's autobiography she claims the song was written for her. Clearly she must know right? Maybe it's a pride thing? Why take credit for it? You got retribution when Eric Clapton wrote his biggest hit of all time about you while you were still married to George. Things have a way or working out in the end.

Warpaint/The XX @ Hollywood Palladium

Warpaint - "The Bees"

Just got back from Hollywood where I was finally able to catch Warpaint live, and The XX too. Both for the first time. Warpaint won me over with their perfect little magical world they created in the "Stars" video. The live clips I saw of them were promising. They sometimes look tentative, but the magic was still there.

the venue: Hollywood Palladium
A bit too posh and filled with Blondie hair model types. It's Hollywood though what
should I expect. Good looking venue, but lacks any soul. The staff selling merch was too cool for school, and acted put out by any questions asked. Boo. The sound quality was pretty good, and the staff outside checks thoroughly. Be warned if you are bringing in recording equipment. You need to hide it well.

Warpaint: I was first impressed with the way they carried themselves. They have grown, and you can feel their confidence booming on stage now. Them all get lost in their music, and they make it hard for you to stand still. Warpaint's rhythm section is delirious. Their drummer brings the danceable groove, and makes you feel their flow. On top of multiple melodic voices, trippy space noodling, and deep smooth bass you have something wonderful brewing.
We were pleased to hear the new songs from their forthcoming LP take most of the short set. These songs sounded really impressive first night of the tour. Let's hope they manage to capture the live feel on record.

The XX sounds great live, but after Warpaint something felt slow and lost in their set. They are really missing a drummer. Their music is begging for some pounding force behind it. I enjoy the chemistry there, but it's one element short of reaching it's full potential in my opinion.

True Blood season 3 is almost half way through. Things are sunday nights
are certainly heating up. Although, I'm disappointed in Alan Ball's decision to
change certain story lines and omit certain characters like "Bubba", he has developed some of characters better than the novels. Ball has done exceptionally well developing Lafayette and Tara in particular. This morning while pondering the direction of this season I kept playing the Morning Parade track sent to me by Lucid Online. Just another Monday Fangover from my vampire soap opera. Yes, I'm acting like a silly old maid.

Coming from one of our favorite places in the world, Russia, we have Moscow's
Upstation. Sung in English with a dreamy 80's teenage yearning, this music
deserves it's time here in America. Excellently crafted "One Little Secret" would have
found a comfortable home on the Breakfast Club Soundtrack. Another strong track "No More Promises" has a nice blend of bass n' drums peppered with electronic goodness.
However , the highlight of their released new music is clearly "Get it On". The track
is dying for a remix, and the dance floors of all Manhattans Upper West side dance clubs.

We look forward to the what the future brings for Upstation. So far
it's a promising start.

You watched us grow from a small unknown independent venue into a space that hosted the best tacos in NYC, incredible talent (Lee Scratch Perry, Kaiju Big Battel, Dan Deacon & Jose Gonzalez to name a few), the Sunday Best dance series, the Gowanus Harvest Fest, the BK County Fair, Score! Pop-Up Mega Swap, Parked: Food Truck Festival, and countless lobster bakes, pig roasts, BBQs and more. This past Memorial Day Weekend, we were so proud to open our doors and display all the hard work we have been putting into the space to make this summer even better…from our new bar, to our atm, to our bocce court. Thousands of you came out and supported us and made it one of the most beautiful weekends we have had yet, so we are sad to announce, that last weekend was the final weekend of BKLYN Yard in our Carroll Gardens home.
Our landlord of the past four years, who used to share our vision for BKLYN Yard, notified us on Tuesday May 1st, that they would no longer honor our lease which had been in place since early this year. They chose not to give us an opportunity to renegotiate, and requested that we take what we have built, and terminate all of our confirmed plans and schedule for BKLYN Yard this summer.
BKLYN Yard is a labor of love for MeanRed, rooted in our core company values: Love for artists, food, music and community. We are sad to see our passion project go in its brightest year, and are sad to let down all the people who have support and worked with us for the past 3 summers.
But if there is one thing we pride ourselves in, its our ability to think outside the box, to take a leap when there is no net, and to reach our highest visions. We wouldn’t be who we are if we let hurdles keep us down. Well, that is after the weeks of negotiations following the draft. When all the dust settles he is looking between 12-15 million for becoming the 1st pick taken overall in the MLB draft tonight.

Harper is the real deal. He lives up the hype, much like his soon to be

new teammate Stephen Strasburg. These guys are the new breed of baseball player.

what the hell was I thinking?
Of course you do.
You go through phases of music, fashion, and friends that
makes your mind spin now.
That's all part of the journey. Many roads leading
to one destination.
I don't want to look back with embarrassment or fear.
I want to be proud of every phase of my life,
and so should you.

I liked "punk" for awhile. NOFX, Pennywise, Gas Huffer, etc
Sadly this led to really bad versions of pop punk that took over
the airwaves after that. I think I learned a lesson from this phase of my life,
and I had a lot of fun going to these shows, and screaming out the lyrics
of these bands in the car with my friends.

Eclipse Soundtrack is a Home Run

Twilight gets it right again.
On the soundtrack at least.

When New Moon announced their soundtrack of Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear, Sea Wolf
etc we were pleasantly stunned. This was written off
by some idiots (pitchfork) who didn't realize what a huge
moment this was good music. The Jonas Brothers generation of
teens was exposed to some really different music, and new artists.
We should have praised Twilight more for taking this route.

Now with this summer Eclipse the producers have assembled and
equally impressive list of artists, and songs. Beck and Bat for Lashes,
The Black Keys, Muse, The Dead Weather, and Band of Horses are
just a part of this awesome collection of songs.

Finally in a world of remakes, sequels, and bland dumb downs we
get something done right. Now the Twilight movies themselves aren't amazing,
but they are good enough. At least they hit a home run with the soundtrack.
This music is going into households it's never gone before. It's going to turn a lot
of people on to bands, and music they have never heard before. We praise
the Twilight staff, and the bands involved. A good thing has happened here.

Nardwuar: The Canadian Interviewing Legend

First of all Happy June 1st everyone. New month, same smashing attitude.
Same smelly funk.

I was You Tubing last night. You start watching something, and get
lost in the related videos. I know a lot of you have been there.
Last night I was on a Nirvana kick. Watching outtakes from
the unplugged show. Eventually I got to Nirvana interviews,
and stumbled onto Nardwuar. He was working for his college station interviewing
Nirvana backstage January 4th. This relatively unknown video is fascinating
for historical reasons, as well as the crazy content. Somehow the Cobain's (eating nasty looking pizza) manage to entertain Nardwuar for quite sometime. I thought that
this was Nardwuar's one big achievement until I noticed all the interviews he landed afterwards. This guy comes off horribly annoying at first. However, the more
you watch the more you appreciate his approach. Plus, he's interviewed a very
cool list of bands. The guy knows his stuff, has cool presents, and crazy questions
for every person or band he interviews. Please check him out.

Ok it's finally arrived.

My favorite LP of 2010 is here. Out of nowhere it seems
Steve Mason (Beta Band) has dropped a beautiful record on us.
There isn't a stinker anywhere on here.

The lyrics have meaning, and there is nothing but truth screaming from
this music. You wait for albums like this to come out. This has elements of his old band, along with Thom yorke and Air style sonic beats(Stress Position, Am I Just a Man, Understand My Heart). There is some haunted depressed Nick Drake soul talk (Hound On My Heel, I Let Her In) However, there isn't anything new musically going on here. This record just comes from someplace special, and that's what makes it so good.

I'm sitting here watching Courtney Love on the View. I'm confused.
Number one, why am I watching the View? Number 2 who or what is
Courtney Love now?

Well, for one her new album Nobody's Daughter (which was released
yesterday) is pretty good.
This took years to make, and I'm happy for her that she finally got it out there.
I do have a problem with her calling it a Hole record though. Her answer for
that is that she owns the name, and likes being in a band. That's great Courtney,
but it's still not a Hole record. If the Paul and Ringo go on tour, and call
themselves the Beatles we aren't buying it ok!? When Axl Rose goes on tour
with no original members, it's not Guns n' Roses, and the same goes
for the Smashing Pumpkins.

It's fear.

Fear of not selling tickets, and albums. Fear that you just aren't good enough.
That fear is unwarranted. In all cases Billy Corgan, Courtney Love, and Axl
Roses are big enough, and good enough to do their thing solo.

And that is exactly what Nobody's Daughter is. It's a solo record.
It's not a Hole record. Is Hole just a brand, a name you can slap
on something? I don't think so. Yes, you own the corporate name,
but you do not own how the people who buy your music view it.
We decide, and I don't think many people just want you to slap
the Hole brand on this album. The soul of this record is Courtney Love.
Hole was a band.

Anyways Courtney I'm proud of you. We met in Tokyo in 1995.
You were a mess then. A real mess.
Now you are clean, straight, and have your shit
together. Your music is as good as ever, and you have your priorities straight.
Let's see what the future holds for you, not "Hole", which died years ago.

Target Field reminds me of, well Target.

Generic, bland, and cheap.

Maybe it's the beige lifeless bricks, or the outfield trees that look similar to Coors Field.

This ballbark looks so unoriginal it hurts. The positives are that they are playing

baseball outside in Minnesota. I really hope that doesn't come back to bite them in the ass.

One cool thing happening for opening day is that the Target dog is sitting right behind

home plate. Turn on your tvs, and catch the dog in the best seat of the house.

Juliana Hatfield: When I Grow Up

Just finished the fantastic Juliana Hatfield memoir, When I Grow Up.

If you are looking for something new to read, and haven't read this yet, I

can recommend this book. For someone who is so shy, and awkward in person,

it's good to see how well she can communicate with her writing.

Her attention to detail makes you feel as if you are

riding around in the van with her. I found my self nodding in agreement at many

of her experiences from playing shitting little clubs, dealing with labels, to

getting screwed over by club owners. She nails the details of life of a smaller

indie rock star to a tee.

I really didn't know too much about Juliana's career other than the basics.

I knew she started with the Blake Babies, and had some early 90's

hits on MTV, and that she still toured in the 2000's. This book gives

you some other interesting tid bits like her tour with Jeff Buckley (where she headlined),

her run in with strange obsessive fans, and 3rd album for Atlantic God's Foot that was rejected and never released.

It's just reassuring that there are people, and musicians like Juliana out there.

This book gives us honest open thoughts from a talented vet of alternative music.

You really feel for her, and want her to succeed. Reading this caused me to

check out more of her career, and makes me wish I'd have seen her live at some point.

Austin One Week Not Too Late

Found myself in Austin this past weekend. A week after SXSW...
I've already done the festival over 5 times, and while
I still love aspects of it, it was nice to see the city
at it's normal pace. My cousin lives there, and showed me around.
He's falling in love with it, and starting to build
a little empire for himself.

It's important to get away. Going to a place full of positive energy,
and interesting things going on helps heal you. If only for a few days.

Bushwick Essentials: Uncles

Uncles is a collaboration between Dan Bateman and Will Schwartz, two Queens-based songwriters who grew up together in Yonkers, NY. They utilize a rotating ensemble to back their songs which includes a double bassist, violin, pianists, and drummers.

Their album, Replacing Words with Other Words, is the last stage of a 2 year process of writing, recording, and subsequently scrapping original material. The ten songs on the record that remain take you from story to story; each is a lyrical microcosm with its own unique characters. There's a lot of sex on the record, some urban grit, a fair share of plaintive mid-western balladeering, tales of nursing-home dimentia, and plenty of violence, too

A few random thoughts this Saturday.

- I've already lost interest in Lost, again.

- Frances Bean Cobain is pictured above. I wonder if she'll be more like
Kurt or Courtney? I hope she is nothing like Kelly Osbourne.

- I've been listening to a lot of the new "Hole" album. There are some really
good songs on there, but why call it a Hole record? It's not. Courtney
does show some maturity, and even a little soul.

- SXSW used to be really cool. Why did they turn it into a huge corporate event?
There are still good shows, and events that go on there. I just miss the festival
as it was in the 90's. Lots of good music, not overcrowded, great vibes. Now you can expect Rachel Ray's Hip SXSW showcase! yeah!

-I'm disappointed with the new Midlake, and Spoon records. They aren't horrible or anything, they just aren't that good either. Maybe I was expecting too much, especially from Midlake.

First off I have a guilty pleasure.
ABC's the bachelor. I don't watch much TV besides for
The Bachelor, The Amazing Race, and my Utah Jazz. For some reason
the dating reality show always catches my interest.

This season is almost over. It's down to two women for
the Bachelor to choose from. The sweet and sincere Tenley,
and the fling I should have left on Spring Break Vienna.

The Bachelor seems like an all around good guy.
Jake is his name. He's a pilot from Dallas, Texas.
For some reason crazy eyed Vienna is got him in
a holding pattern. Maybe that eye is hypnotizing him.
I don't get it.
Anyways, the show is about to start so I'll bid you adieu.

Conan's Final Tonight Show

Conan's final show was one of his best.

Conan ended with a positive inspiring hopeful message that I believe
